Trending: Huddersfield reach Premier League

Dawson tips Spurs for Europa progress

Tottenham captain Michael Dawson has said he believes the White Hart Lane side can claim their first Europa League away win to overcome Basel at St Jakob-Park and reach the semi-finals.

Spurs recovered from 2-0 down as the sides drew 2-2 at White Hart Lane last week, and Dawson is confident they can win in Switzerland and continue their European run.

"We're in a good position to go through, despite what some think," he said. "We're still in the hat and we're still fighting. Win a football match and we're through."

He said Spurs' European run, coupled with a domestic season that has them in contention for a top-four finish, had vindicated his decision to stay and fight for his place after manager Andre Villas-Boas had appeared set to sell him to QPR in the summer.

Dawson has again become an integral part of the side since Younes Kaboul suffered an injury, and said: "I believed I could get back into the team, and that I could help the team achieve things.

"Had I wanted to, I could have gone - but I never gave it a thought. It's a great feeling leading those boys out and, if I can help the boys to achieve things, it would be great. Sometimes it isn't easy, but you have to keep believing."

Tottenham face a Basel side that have not conceded a goal in their past four Europa League home games, and must try to find a way through without the injured Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe.

Emmanuel Adebayor, with two goals in his last two games, is likely to be their man dangerman in Switzerland, and Villa-Boas said: "We've seen how influential he can be.

"He is really enjoying his football. His link-up play has improved tremendously. He has been much more involved in the building of play and assisted and created so much this season, allowing other players to flourish."
