Wilson parts ways with Sheffield United

Sheffield United have parted ways with manager Danny Wilson just five matches out from the completion of the League One season, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

Wilson departed Bramall Lane after two years in charge of the Blades, despite steering his side to a play-off position - just six points away from second place Bournemouth.

But United feel they could be occupying an automatic promotion spot if it weren't for a dismal run of one win in six matches recently.

Wednesday's 2-0 defeat to 11th-placed Crawley was the final straw in Wilson's tenure as a statement on the club's website confirmed assistant manager Frank Barlow has also been sacked, while first-team coach Chris Morgan will take charge for the remainder of the season.

"We must thank Danny and Frank for all their endeavours and hard work over the past two seasons," Blades owner Kevin McCabe said. "We now have a mini season for this club to achieve success and we will all back Chris in this mission."

Wilson's playing career with rivals Sheffield Wednesday was always a contentious point with United fans.
