Police call for calm in Yorkshire derby

West Yorkshire Police have warned supporters against a repeat of the ugly scenes which marred October's match between Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United.

Leeds meet Wednesday in the Championship on Saturday lunchtime for the first time since their 1-1 draw last year which was tainted by an attack on goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

Kirkland was pushed in the face by Aaron Cawley, 21, from Cheltenham, who pleaded guilty to assault and invading the pitch. He was jailed for 16 weeks.

The match at Hillsborough was also marred by distasteful chanting, and, ahead of this weekend's fixture at Elland Road, the police have urged fans to be on their best behaviour.

Chief Superintendent Paul Money, of West Yorkshire Police, said in the Sun: "Anyone thinking of attending to cause disorder should think again. They will be arrested and we'll apply for banning orders."
