Terim 'believed' in semi-final hope

Galatasaray manager Fatih Terim said he saw a glimmer of Champions League semi-final qualification as his side raised hope in Istanbul with a remarkable comeback against Spanish giants Real Madrid.

• Rigg: Madrid survive Galatasaray scare to progress

Trailing 3-0 from the first-leg in the Spanish capital, Galatasaray were on course for a for an unlikely passage to the semi-finals when Didier Drogba, Wesley Sneijder and Emmanuel Eboue put the club 3-1 up in the match.

"When it went 3-1," Terim told NTV Spor, "Yes, I started to think of going through to the semi-finals. It had not been the case up until that moment.

"But especially just after Drogba's disallowed goal, that was the moment when we really believed it."

But a second Cristiano Ronaldo strike put an end to the Turks' dreams, sealing Madrid's final-four spot with a 5-3 aggregate score.

However, Terim said he was proud that his players were able to match the superstars of Madrid over two legs and believed they had brought pride to the club's legions of fans.

"Incredible supporters and an incredible atmosphere - it makes me happy that we played with such passion and gave them such pleasure," he said.

"We must say thanks to (Jose) Mourinho and Real Madrid. He came to our dressing room to congratulate our players.

"I must also congratulate my players as they've beaten one of the most powerful teams in the world.

"From the very beginning my aim was to create a Galatasaray that would honour their supporters. I see this happening today. I'm happy to have kept my promise."
