Forster talks up Newcastle return

Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster has said he has “unfinished business” with his former club Newcastle United and would like to return one day.

Fraser Forster's performances for Celtic in the Champions League earned a place in the England squad.
Fraser Forster has had an impressive season

Forster, 25, who was born in Northumberland, began his career at St James’ Park after coming through the club’s academy ranks.

However, he was unable to seize the No. 1 spot from fellow academy graduate Tim Krul and spent time on loan at Norwich City and Celtic before completing a £2.5 million move to the Scottish champions in 2012.

Although he is enjoying life at Celtic Park, Forster said it had been tough to leave his hometown club and he would welcome a return to Tyneside one day.

“I’d like to go back to Newcastle at some point if the opportunity arises,” he told BBC’s Late Kick-Off. “I’m a Newcastle fan and I’ve got unfinished business there. It was a wrench to leave, but it wasn’t meant to be.

“I enjoyed my time out on loan and after enjoying playing week in, week out it was important I carried on playing. I wanted to be No. 1 and it was clear that wasn’t going to happen at Newcastle.

“Everyone wants to be playing in the Premier League. It’s the place to be. At the minute, I’m very happy at Celtic and playing Champions League football, but long-term it would be nice to play in the Premier League.”

Forster has been in impressive form for Celtic this season, and was nicknamed ‘The Great Wall’ by the Spanish media for his superb performances against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Such displays earned him a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the recent World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro.
