Neville to leave Everton

Everton captain Phil Neville has announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

•  Jolly: Time tells for Neville
•  Blog: Tackle that defined Neville

Neville, 36, moved to Goodison Park in 2005 after ten years with Manchester United and has made over 300 appearances for the club.

He told the club's official website: "It's been an honour to play for and captain Everton Football Club. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time on Merseyside and will leave with immense pride.

"I would like to thank the manager, chairman, all of the staff and the players at Everton for their continued support during my time at the club. I'd also like to pay a special thanks to the fans, who have been amazing over the past eight years and Everton will always have a place in my heart."

He has already announced a move into coaching as he joins the England Under-21 set-up for this summer's European Championship in Israel, but Neville has played down any suggestion he is ready to hang up his boots.

"I want to continue to play at the top level as long as I physically can, and will be weighing up my options before making a decision on my next move," he said. "I'll now be doing everything I can to help Everton finish as high up the league table as possible."

Neville captained Everton in the 2009 FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea, having scored in the penalty shootout victory over Manchester United in the semi-finals, but he has been unable to add any silverware to his collection since joining the Toffees.

During his time at Old Trafford, he won six Premier League titles, one Champions League and three FA Cups. He also earned 59 England caps, appearing in the European Championship squads of 1996, 2000 and 2004, with his last international call-up coming in 2007.
