Gomes out for the season

Heurelho Gomes suffered a broken hand during Hoffenheim's 3-0 victory over Dusseldorf on Friday and will not return before the end of the season, when his loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur expires.

Gomes sustained the injury early in the second half when Andreas Lambertz slid into him. "I have broken my hand," Gomes confirmed late on Friday. "But I will return stronger than ever."

The 32-year-old had replaced demoted Hoffenheim 'keeper Tim Wiese on the last day of the winter transfer window. In nine games for the struggling Bundesliga side he gave the defence some much needed stability, only conceding ten goals during that period after 42 goals against in the previous 19 league games.

However, it is unlikely Gomes will be at Hoffenheim next season and he has previously hinted he will not stay in Bundesliga and was interested in a return to White Hart Lane in the summer.

On Monday, German football magazine kicker reported that Hoffenheim wanted to lure Gomes on a permanent deal. The injury, the paper reports, has not put an end to such hopes but is also linking him with a transfer to Netherlands outfit Twente Enschede.

Hoffenheim, meanwhile, have announced that Belgium Under-21 goalkeeper Koen Casteels, 20, is to be first choice for the rest of the season.

"Koen Casteels did a super job," new Hoffenheim boss Markus Gisdol said. "Koen is now our number one. Jens Grahl is the new number two. Tim [Wiese] has accepted this and understands the decision 100%."
