Neuer desperate for more trophies

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer believes it will be a disappointing season for the club if they fail to add to the Bundesliga title they tied up at the weekend.

• Hoeness: Bayern worthy champions

A 1-0 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday secured Bayern their 22nd Bundesliga title. However, with a Champions League quarter-final second leg against Juventus and a DFB-Pokal semi-final against Wolfsburg coming up this month, there is still plenty more to play for.

And while Neuer, who has only conceded 13 goals all season, says the team will enjoy the title win, he is determined to help inspire the club to the Treble.

"It was a cool feeling when the title was finally sealed," he said. "I was over the moon. Nobody has to talk about Juve right now. We are all aware how important the game is, but you have to be human and savour the moment. We have done it after only 28 games. Nobody thought we are capable of doing so. You have to be proud of what the team and the coaching staff has achieved.

"Until now it is a very good season. We can proud of what we have shown in the league. If this remains our only title we will, however, all be disappointed."

Bayern will be in Turin on Wednesday looking to defend their 2-0 first-leg lead as they eye their first Champions League trophy since 2001.

Sporting director Matthias Sammer believes it is vital that the club put their title win to one side and concentrate on progressing in Europe.

"Back in 1997, Juventus won the championship and then celebrated. We would never have won the Champions League otherwise," Sammer, who was part of the Borussia Dortmund side who beat Juve 3-1, said. "We will need all our strength and power for that game. The team must realise that because of their great performances we can achieve a lot more this season."

After winning the title on Saturday, Bayern headed straight home to Munich, where only a handful of fans celebrated.

"You're a magnificent team," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said during a brief speech on the plane back home to the players. "But do your celebrating at home. We have a job to do in Turin."

Bayern president Uli Hoeness echoed Rummenigge's statement, saying: "We've hit our first major target, but if we want to crown the season we have to keep going. We now want to turn a super season into a super plus season. Not taking this chance of making the Champions League semi-finals, and then the cup final next week would be fatal."
