Valencia leave it late

Valencia kept their Champions League hopes alive with a late 2-1 victory over Real Valladolid.

• La Liga: Fabregas hat-trick

Valencia looked on course for victory at the Mestalla when Mikel Balenziaga turned the ball into his own net before the break, and the visitors found themselves down to ten men when Henrique Sereno received a second yellow card with just under an hour played. Nonetheless, they restored parity through Oscar Gonzalez with 71 minutes gone.

However, the hosts had the final say as Jonas netted three minutes injury time to secure all three points and maintain the pressure on fourth-placed Real Sociedad.

Atletico Madrid clung on for a 0-0 draw at mid-table Getafe despite ending a tetchy contest with nine men.

Both Mario Suarez and Diego Godin were dismissed for the third-placed visitors who now trail city rivals Real Madrid by three points in the Primera Division.

Atletico had the better of what few chances were created but star striker Radamel Falcao had a rare off night.

Suarez was the first Rojiblanco to see red, picking up his second caution for a needless handball near the halfway line. Atletico were reduced to nine in injury-time as Godin was shown a second yellow card for an elbow on Alvaro Vazquez.

Rayo Vallecano picked up their first away win in just under three months after a narrow 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo.

A smart finish by captain Piti gave the Madrid side the lead early in the first half and substitute Andrija Delibasic made sure of the points late on.

The result means Rayo temporarily move up to eighth place in the Primera Division table while Celta slip below their Galician rivals Deportivo and down to 19th in the table.

Espanyol took a giant step towards securing their future in the top flight for another season after beating Osasuna 2-0 at the Reyno de Navarra.

Hector Moreno gave the Catalans the lead early in the second half and Mubarak Wakaso made sure of all three points in stoppage time.

The result takes Javier Aguirre's side 13 points clear of the relegation zone but Osasuna, who are five points above the bottom three, still have some work to do.
