Vertonghen eager to continue goal run

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is hoping to emerge as an unlikely goal source in the next couple of games, as the Premier League's Player of the Month for March aims to take his season tally into double figures.

Spurs will need to find new scoring threats when they welcome Everton to White Hart Lane on Sunday following Gareth Bale's ankle injury against FC Basel on Thursday night, after the club confirmed their Welsh flier will be out of action for a minimum of two weeks with ankle ligament damage.

Vertonghen, 25, has already scored six goals in his first season at Tottenham and he is hopeful of adding to that as Spurs look to defy their mounting injury crisis and finish the campaign on a high.

"I think the opponents sometimes lose their attention marking defenders," Vertonghen told the Tottenham website. "My secret to scoring is maybe that Gareth Bale gave me three amazing assists and I'm very happy to score these goals and win this Player of the Month trophy.

"I always aim to get into double figures for goals and I hope I can do it again. With all the injuries we have, we will need some goals to stay up where we want to be."

Vertonghen is expecting a tough battle against fellow top four chasers Everton, suggesting his side have to play every game as if it is a cup final in the final few weeks of the campaign.

"We will have to be right at the top of our game against Everton, they are a tough side to beat but we'll be ready," he added. "We have some injuries, we have played a lot of games, but we still need to be at our best.

"We have big players who are used to the pressure. It's like a final for us every game now, so we have to perform. We know we have to win every game to be in the top four and to move into the next round of the Europa League.

"It's a good pressure and it can be a good motivation. We will be there on Sunday and we want to win."
