Bale back training in a fortnight

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that Gareth Bale is expected to return to training within two weeks after he sprained ankle ligaments in Thursday's draw with Basel.

• Blog: Reflecting on Basel

Bale was stretchered off at the end of Spurs' Europa League quarter-final first leg tie with Basel at White Hart Lane. The scores finished level at 2-2 ahead of the return match in Switzerland next Thursday.

It was feared the injury could rule the Wales international out for the remainder of the season, although Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas said after the game that he was optimistic the absence would not be long term.

Tottenham confirmed on Friday afternoon that the news is not as bad as feared, with Bale, William Gallas and Aaron Lennon all to be sidelined for around a fortnight before returning to training.

A statement on Tottenham's website read: "The club can confirm that Gareth Bale (sprained ankle ligaments), William Gallas (calf strain) and Aaron Lennon (soft tissue contusion below the knee) all underwent scans today (Friday) after being forced off with injuries during our Europa League quarter-final first leg draw with Basel last night.

"The results of these scans have indicated that all three players are expected to return to training within two weeks. Bale, Gallas and Lennon have all commenced their treatment today and are responding positively."

The injured trio are set to miss the matches against Everton and Basel, with Spurs' home game versus Manchester City on April 21 a possible return date.
