Di Canio 'will get best from players'

Adam Johnson has said new Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio will demand - and get - the best from his players.

• Blog: Can PDC make point at Chelsea?

Di Canio, 44, was a surprise appointment at the Stadium of Light following the sacking of Martin O'Neill on Saturday.

And with Sunderland only a point above the relegation zone, Di Canio needs to end the run of poor form that has seen them go eight games without a win.

The Black Cats are not expected to win his first game in charge, away to Chelsea on Sunday, but Johnson told Sunderland TV: "We are going to see him getting the best out of the lads.

"He demands your best, and obviously we have got to work so hard. Everyone is excited and can't wait to play.

"He is full of enthusiasm and energy. I think if you do well for him, he's going to be a great manager to play for.

"We've had this week until the Chelsea game, and the gaffer has been trying to get his points across. It's been a lot to take in all at once but, come Sunday, we will know what he wants from us."

He said Di Canio "will want to make his players feel like the best in the world", adding: "We will take that into Sunday. It's a tough game, but everyone thinks we can go there and do well."
