Rodgers hopes to emulate Anfield greats

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has set himself the "huge challenge" of emulating predecessors Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley by beginning a new era of greatness at Anfield.

Shankly brought the Reds back up to the old First Division in the early 1960s, and by the time he left the job in 1974 he had won three titles, two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup for the club. That success laid the foundations for his successor, Paisley, who won six league titles and three European Cups among many other trophies during his extraordinary nine-year tenure.

Rodgers, who took over last summer, revealed he draws upon that exalted pair for inspiration as he aims to build a new period of dominance at the club, who won their last league title in 1990.

"First and foremost there is no comparison in relation to those greats of the past; those two managers will always be remembered here," said Rodgers.

"For someone like me, my job is to build the club again, like Bill Shankly did very successfully and that set up the many successful eras that everyone remembers Liverpool for.

"That's what I'm trying to replicate and it's a huge challenge, because the club is an institution, but it is a challenge that I've enjoyed every minute of and all the staff and players have also.

"I've seen real progress this season and I would expect us to continue that over the next couple of years."
