Turkish delight for Real

Real Madrid took a major step towards reaching the last four in the Champions League as they defeated Galatasaray 3-0 in their quarter-final first leg at the Bernabeu.

• Rigg: Gala play into Madrid hands
• Uersfeld: Dortmund stay smooth
• Cartlidge: Caballero heroics

Madrid took the lead on nine minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo chipping perfectly over goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, and they doubled their advantage on 29 minutes when Karim Benzema fired home at the far post.

Didier Drogba had several opportunities to net an away goal for the Turkish side in the first half, but was unable to find the net. Wesley Sneijder, making his return to the Bernabeu, endured a difficult 45 minutes before being withdrawn at half-time.

Galatasaray were unable to produce a threat as the match entered the second half, and indeed it was the hosts who added to the scoreline, substitute Gonzalo Higuain heading home from Xabi Alonso's free-kick on 73 minutes.

Malaga held Borussia Dortmund to a 0-0 draw at La Rosaleda.

Dortmund had the better of the first half, and Mario Gotze twice had golden opportunities to break the deadlock, but on each occasion he fluffed his lines.

Malaga threatened in spells throughout the match, and indeed came extremely close to taking the lead through a Weligton header just before the break, but for the most part the away side looked the more likely to score.

Dortmund had notable chances to break the deadlock in the second period. Robert Lewandowski, receiving the ball in the area shortly after the restart, completely miscued his shot; Gotze, running clear again later in the half, flashed an effort across the face of goal and out of play.

However, as the match wore on, chances grew increasingly sparse and it ended in a stalemate.
