Warnock hits out at Hughes

Neil Warnock has taken a swipe at Mark Hughes, suggesting he should replace him at Leeds United and "destroy another team of mine''.

Hughes filled the void at Queens Park Rangers after Warnock was sacked in January 2012 but despite keeping them in the Premier League last season was sacked himself in November. Rangers had failed to win a single Premier League game despite Hughes being given a huge transfer kitty to reshape Warnock's squad.

Hughes is one of several names thought to be Leeds' shortlist, with former Reading boss Brian McDermott the current favourite with the bookmakers.

Warnock left Leeds on Monday night after a run of three successive defeats culminating in a 2-1 home loss to Derby which effectively ended any lingering play-off hopes. He had already stated he would leave in the summer if he failed to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Warnock told talkSPORT: "I personally hope Mark Hughes follows me again and destroys another team of mine.

"I don't think it's a club for a young manager. There is so much going on behind the scenes it is ridiculous really. It needs somebody who has seen it all and done it all.

"I laugh when I see some of these names. A) We can't afford the compensation and B) do you think Mark Hughes would want Leeds United at the moment? It's a hard one but there are a lot of applicants.''

Warnock has again suggested his next move would be into some form of director of football role.

He added: "I've got a young family and I want to relax a bit. But I do feel now, especially with the tenure of managers being so short, that there is a massive gap between the owners of a club and the manager himself and I don't think there is enough expertise in between those two roles.

"I do think, even if it's only a couple of days a week, I can help somebody. I'm sure there is somebody that would be crying out for that sort of role.''
