Rodgers hopeful of Reina stay

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said he expects Pepe Reina to remain with the club next season, despite rumours linking him with a move to Barcelona.

Liverpool expect Pepe Reina to extend his contract with the club

Uncertainty over the future of Barca goalkeeper Victor Valdes has made Reina a target for the Catalan giants and the Spaniard is yet to secure an extension with Liverpool.

Reina's ties with Barcelona - having spent three seasons at the club - and his father's public comments suggesting a return to the Camp Nou is imminent have fuelled suggestions of a summer move.

But Rodgers believes the 30-year-old is happy at Anfield and does not plan on moving back to Spain.

"I think a lot of the stuff this year has been based on speculation with Valdes going, or possibly going, and there have been links they [Barcelona] will be in for another keeper," Rodgers said. "His dad has also said some things. But I see him as someone who is hopefully going to be here. He is 30 years of age and is someone who looks after his body.

"Pepe and I speak a lot. He’s a good man and I’ve got real respect for him as a player and as a human being. He understands everything we are trying to do here and is a great voice in the little debriefing meetings we have with the group and with the defenders and other goalkeepers.

"He understands everything we are trying to do here and is a great voice in the little debriefing meetings we have with the group and with the defenders and other goalkeepers. He has never been unsettled and our relationship is very strong. I have given him and a few of the senior boys real responsibility and I think they have enjoyed that."
