Ba: Trophies more important than top four

Demba Ba admits he feels success in the FA Cup and Europa League is more important than finishing in the top four for Chelsea, insisting he wants to be remembered as a trophy winner.

• Blog: Ba magic inspires Chelsea

Ba, 27, scored the winner in Chelsea's FA Cup quarter-final win against Manchester United on Monday after being rested for the trip to Southampton two days earlier.

The Senegal international has defended Rafa Benitez's rotation policy - which was highly criticised by Chelsea fans - claiming the Blues must take their hopes of winning a trophy this season seriously.

"When you retire, no one remembers that you finished in the top four," he said. "But they do remember you won a trophy, so it's important as a player that you win a trophy. Yes, the top four is very important - but we want a trophy.

"We are looking very good in two competitions - the Europa League and the FA Cup. And we're going to do everything to win them both."

Ba is yet to win a trophy in his professional career and will have to help his side overcome Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final if that drought is to be broken.

"I have not yet won a trophy in my career but hopefully this will be the season that happens," he said. "We're playing against one of the best teams in the country - but we'll go to Wembley to win.

"We always talk about trophies here. That has to be the aim for the players and the club but we have to prove we can do it on the pitch."

The striker's spectacular volley at Stamford Bridge will go down as one of the goals of the season, but Ba preferred to deflect the praise onto Juan Mata, who provided the assist with a delicate chip.

"I don't know if it was the best goal I have ever scored... but probably. It was brilliant and it was in a very important game as well, which makes it even more exciting. It was a fantastic pass, perfect. It was great timing. When you have a pass like that it's difficult for the defender."
