Lewandowski to step down - report

Bayer Leverkusen boss Sascha Lewandowski is to step down from his job after this season and return to the club's youth academy, according to reports, clearing the way for Sami Hyypia to take sole control of first-team coaching affairs.

Leverkusen are currently coached by both Hyypia and Lewandowski, but over the past few weeks have made their feelings clear that the shared set-up could not last forever.

According to kicker sources, Lewandowski has now decided to return to his old job as head of the Leverkusen youth academy.

In mid-March a German tabloid had fired against Lewandowksi, accusing him of "pomposity". Despite the club hitting back at the tabloid in a press release, it now appears that Lewandowski will not stay in the hot seat for much longer.

Former Liverpool captain Hyypia is to take over from him. The Finn is currently without a coaching license but only recently the Finnish FA had registered him for a special UEFA course to earn his credentials. Leverkusen will reportedly install 33-year-old Jan-Moritz Lichte, currently an assistant coach at Leverkusen.

Lichte had joined Leverkusen from St.Pauli, where he was also the assistant coach, ahead of the current season. When joining Leverkusen last summer, he was described as "a quiet strategist, as the brain" by Bild.
