Redknapp: Defence an 'absolute disaster'

Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has launched a stinging attack on his side's defending as his Premier League relegation battlers slipped to a 3-2 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Redknapp pulled few punches in lambasting his accident prone players, labelling QPR's defensive effort in the opening 45 minutes as an 'absolute disaster' with the defeat leaving the Loftus Road club seven points adrift of safety with just seven games left to play.

QPR ultimately came close to an improbable positive result against a Fulham side reduced to ten men for the final few minutes following the dismissal of midfielder Steve Sidwell, yet Redknapp conceded his QPR gave themselves too much to do after their early errors.

"We gave away the most terrible goals I've ever seen since I've been managing a football team," said Redknapp. "A penalty, losing the ball and an own-goal, scandalous goals. It was an absolute disaster. You cannot give goals away like that and win football matches.

"We got a goal back and came back in the second half and absolutely murdered them. When it went to 3-2, I could only see one winner, I wouldn't have even taken a draw at that point, but I was disappointed with the last ten minutes.

"Christopher Samba put himself up front and then we started launching balls up and that is not how we play. When you get the extra man you've got to make use of it. We had to be patient and we didn't do that."

Despite his annoyance at his side's continuing defensive woes, Redknapp is refusing to hoist the white flag in his bid to pull off an amazing survival act, even though he admitted QPR are running out of time to get themselves back into contention to scramble away from the relegation zone.

Redknapp suggested his team need to beat relegation rivals Wigan at Loftus Road on Sunday to keep their hopes alive, as the experienced tactician is trying to remain upbeat.

"We've not given up," he added. "We've got to beat Wigan, we've got to keep going. It's getting harder as another game has gone by but I don't think we should have got beaten at Villa and I don't think we should have got beaten at Fulham."
