Nine-goal Bayern keeping focus on Juve

Bayern Munich players and officials have said their astonishing 9-2 Bundesliga win over Hamburg will not distract them from their Champions League game at Juventus on Tuesday.

• Schaaf: Bayern destroys HSV

Despite resting several first-teamers ahead of the Juve match, the Bavarians notched up the highest Bundesliga victory since Bayer Leverkusen's 9-1 win at SSV Ulm in 2000.

Bayern have a 20-point lead over Borussia Dortmund and could seal the Bundesliga championship by beating Eintracht Frankfurt next weekend, but coach Jupp Heynckes was thinking only of the Champions League and said the nine-goal show was now irrelevant.

"We won't read too much into the result," he explained. "We face very different opponents on Tuesday."

Bayern winger Thomas Muller, rested until the 64th minute, also believed that the Juve match would be a tough challenge, adding: "Juventus rely on unity and team performance - and those are always the most difficult opponents. It'll be a totally different game. I'm certainly not thinking it'll end 9-2."

Mario Mandzukic was also rested, with Heynckes handing a rare start to Peru international Claudio Pizarro, who repaid him with four goals.

Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who twisted his ankle in the final minutes of the game but will be fit to face Juve, added: "It'll be a very, very tough match. Juventus are one of the best teams in Europe, and they are unbeaten in Champions League.

"They're very smart, ruthless and cunning. Give them one chance and they'll score."

Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge took delight in the 9-2 hammering, telling Abendzeitung: "What the team did was world class. How they played and what they have achieved this season is sheer class - you can only hand out compliments to them.

"But it is a different competition on Tuesday. We are prepared, and everybody goes into the match fully concentrated. I am looking forward to the match.

"We are still in the competition and other big clubs like Manchester United are not. We go into the match with great motivation. Despite the strong opponent, our goal is to go through to the semi-finals, and we have that chance."
