Ancelotti is staying as boss, say PSG

Carlo Ancelotti will be Paris Saint-Germain coach next season and the club will encourage David Beckham to stay, their president has told L'Equipe.

• Video: PSG prepare for Barca clash

Ancelott's future has been the subject of constant speculation since he missed out on the Ligue 1 title after taking over at the Parc des Princes midway through last season.

But with the 53-year-old having guided his team to a seven-point lead at the top of the table and into the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the Coupe de France this season, Nasser al-Khelaifi said he was "doing good work".

"He's got a year left on his contract," the 39-year-old president said. "I don't understand why everyone's talking about Carlo Ancelotti's future.

"We're seven points ahead of Marseille, we're in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the Coupe de France. That's good work.

"If we were second or third in Ligue 1, I'd understand that questions were being asked about his future at PSG. That's not the case. Our objective is to win the title. The only mistake we could make is not to win it."

Responding to speculation that either Jose Mourinho or Arsene Wenger were being lined up to replace Ancelotti, Al-Khelaifi said: "Those rumours aren't new. They've existed ever since we came to the club. Don't see anything more than just rumours."

He praised Beckham, who has yet to comment on his future beyond the end of the season, calling the decision to bring in the former LA Galaxy player "one of the best" the club had made.

"He's fantastic on and off the pitch," he explained. "Sometimes, you can make a bad choice. But signing David is one of the best decisions we've made.

"As a man, player and ambassador, he's exceptional. He creates something in the squad. Everyone adores him."

He said the club was set to discuss extending the midfielder's contract beyond the end of the season, adding: "We're going to talk to him. Whatever his decision, we'll support David. He only deserves good things.

"He's very happy in Paris. Honestly, we want to keep him with us next season."

Qatar-backed PSG's virtually limitless funds mean they can compete for the world's best players, but al-Khelaifi claimed reports that Cristiano Ronaldo would be the next and biggest name to arrive would not necessarily come true.

"It's only a rumour. He's at Real Madrid, and I think he's very happy there," he said.

"I'm not saying a big player won't arrive next summer. We've got the end of the season to deal with first, and we'll then begin to look at those questions."
