Hamburg chief: Bayern defeat 'disgraceful'

Hamburger SV chief Carl Jarchow has called for consequences following Hamburg's 9-2 sinking at Bayern, but vowed to continue his support of boss Torsten Fink.

The defeat at Bayern was Hamburg's heaviest Bundesliga loss in 50 years. The only team to have played in all Bundesliga seasons have only previously been on the wrong end of a 9-2 drubbing once, against 1860 Munich in 1963/64.

The hammering left the Hamburg players speechless.

"There are no words to explain the game today," Hamburg skipper Heiko Westermann said.

Westermann had scored one of the two consolations goal four minutes from time but was not buoyed by his goal.

"I am ashamed for myself and the team for the weaky performance over 90 minutes. We gifted them their goals and gave them the ball even when we were not under any pressure," he said.

Hamburg only won 38.4% of the 50-50 situations they were faced with and committed 15 fouls throughout the game, although Westermann believes his side should have been more physical in the midfield.

"There were too many inaccurate passes and too few fouls," he said. "I don't think we committed a foul all game and we showed no resistance. I am sorry for our fans and the club. It was the worst and heaviest ever defeat and that is very bitter. It was an awful performance."

Speaking on Sunday, club chief Jarchow said the sinking will not go without consequences for the players.

"The team totally failed and gave up after only five minutes. That is disgraceful and unworthy of a Bundesliga team. We will draw our conclusions from this game," he raged.

Jarchow, however, did not question Hamburg boss Fink, saying: "The coach does not have to go. We unanimously are of the opinion to continue to work together."

The Hamburg boss hoped he was able to bring his team back to life.

"We were brutally bad in all departments. I have never experienced anything like it in my coaching career. I must and will build my team up again, so that we show the right reaction against Freiburg," Fink said. "We have to recover from today's game and do a lot of analysis." Hamburg players, meanwhile, apologised to their fans and invited them to a BBQ following Hamburg's game against Fortuna Dusseldorf in mid-April.

"We want to face up to our fans, justify ourselves to the fans," keeper Rene Adler was quoted as saying on the club's homepage.

Despite the heavy defeat, Hamburg still have a chance to qualify for next season's Europa League. With seven games left to play in the Bundesliga, Hamburg are in ninth position but only trail Mainz - who occupy the first Europa League spot - by one point.
