Six injured at WC stadium re-opening

Police used tear gas and smoke grenades in chaotic scenes in Brazil on Friday, as football supporters scrambled to buy tickets at the re-opening of the Arena Fonte Nova in the north-eastern state of Bahia.

The stadium has recently undergone a £217 million makeover in preparations for the 2014 World Cup, but the opening of the gates in the city of Salvador went horribly wrong.

With no barriers to organise the thousands of fans lining up for tickets to the first game at the refurbished stadium - a clash between rivals Bahia and Vitoria - violence broke out and police responded, leading to six injuries.

Bahia government spokesman Jacques Wagner said an investigation into the incident would be launched immediately, though no arrests have yet been made.

"We are going to come down with the full force of the law. What happened is unacceptable," Wagner said.

Earlier on Friday, construction worker Raimundo Nonato Lima Costa died after a fall at another 2014 World Cup venue, the Amazon Arena in Manaus, Brazil.
