Rodgers issues warning to players

Brendan Rodgers has warned his Liverpool players to avoid discussing club business on international duty - or risk the sort of controversy currently surrounding Luis Suarez.

Suarez reportedly told the Uruguayan media during the week that he would consider leaving Anfield to join a club in the Champions League.

Suarez, who was back in South America for Uruguay's World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Chile, later insisted that his words had been "twisted" by the media in his homeland. And Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre was quick to defend the 26-year-old, suggesting that he had been misquoted.

Rodgers is confident that Suarez will be a Liverpool player next season, but has warned his squad of the dangers of speaking about their club. Asked if Suarez would be moving on soon, the manager said: "No."

And he added: "I always say to players that I've got a very, very simple rule: When you're with Liverpool, just talk about Liverpool. When you're away with your international teams, just concentrate on your international team - and there's no drama.

"So what he says when he's away with Uruguay, or what the England boys say, that's of no great relevance to Liverpool."

Rodgers is aware that controversy tends to follow Suarez around, but is not concerned about the striker's reported comments. He said: "I haven't spoken to Luis yet. He was obviously back yesterday, later on in the afternoon, and we just ran the medical team over him, and he was training this morning.

"I haven't spoken to him. Obviously, every time Luis goes away, there's always something. But all I'm aware of is that we've got an outstanding football player, who has given everything for the club and he's very happy here."

Suarez is facing an international ban after appearing to punch Chile defender Gonzalo Jara - currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from West Brom - as Uruguay were beaten 2-0 in Santiago on Tuesday. Rodgers insisted he had not seen a video of the incident, and asked to comment, said: "As I said earlier. I won't speak about federations. Only Liverpool."
