Allardyce wants safety before contract

Sam Allardyce has said he will not sign a new contract with West Ham United until the club are mathematically safe from relegation.

Allardyce's future at Upton Park has been the subject of conjecture with his current terms due to expire in the summer.

But on Wednesday the former Newcastle boss revealed he is on the verge of extending his stay in East London.

Speaking on Thursday, ahead of Saturday's home game against West Brom, Allardyce said he is unwilling to put pen to paper until they have reached the 38-point mark, with the side currently on 33 points.

"I always want to know we are safe first (before signing)," Allardyce said. "I suppose I could sign a contract that said if we get relegated then I don't want it, but I won't do that.

"We think we will be safe at 38 points. Then we can push on to 40 if we can. The contract negotiations are ongoing at this moment in time. We talk confidentially among ourselves and hopefully we can come to an agreement shortly."
