FFA chief: Pressure on Socceroos boss

Australia coach Holger Osieck is a man under pressure, the chief of the country's Football Federation (FFA) has said.

Osieck's side drew 2-2 with Oman in a Sydney World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, meaning they travel to Japan for their next game needing to take something from it to remain in control of their own fate.

They are currently level with Oman on six points in third place - seven behind Japan, the group leaders, with the top two in the group going through - but have a game in hand.

And FFA chief David Gallop said: "No one needs to remind Holger, and indeed his staff, and indeed the team, that they're under pressure.

"We want to qualify for Brazil. We've got three games to come, and we need to be making sure we give every effort to winning those games."

Gallop stressed it "goes without saying" that the Socceroos have the full support of the FFA, but "we are under pressure to make it to Brazil, and the coach and staff know that.''

He said that, after successfully qualifying for the 2006 and 2010 tournaments, it would not be "catastrophic'' for them to miss out on Brazil 2014.

But he added: "We want to go to a third in a row. It's important, and we'll be doing everything we can to get there.''
