Villa not worried by transfer gossip

Barcelona striker David Villa says he is not concerned about the possibility of being one of the summer's major focuses of transfer speculation.

Villa, 31, was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in the January transfer window, having reportedly become unhappy with the limited playing time he was being given at club level, after coming back from almost a year out with a broken leg.

The Asturian has featured more regularly for Barca recently, starting their last four games, and scoring in both the 4-0 Champions League win over AC Milan and the 3-1 La Liga stroll past Rayo Vallecano.

The Spain international's future remains up in the air, however, and he told Spanish TV channel La 1 on Monday that he was used to dealing with transfer speculation so he was not worried about what might happen.

“I hope not [to be the talk of the summer window], but if in the end I am, well I have been for many years,” Villa said. “Although less last year, when I was injured. But at the moment, the truth is it does not concern me at all.”

La Roja’s record goalscorer was in the starting line-up for Friday’s 1-1 World Cup qualifier against Finland, and he said he appreciated the support Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque had shown him during his time out injured.

“It is an honour that Del Bosque showed so much care for me,” Villa said. “I will appreciate it all my life. I could not lose hope from day to day. I knew that I had to recover well from such an important injury. I want to be able to repay the support I got from the people around me."

Villa did not threaten much as Spain struggled to break down Finland's packed defence on Friday, and was removed by Del Bosque midway through the second half.

There is no cause for concern for Villa, however, as he and his Spanish team-mates have bounced back from similar small setbacks before, and will be aiming to do the same against France on Tuesday.

“We have a defined style of play and we are not going to change,” he said. “This style has given us little frights before, like against Switzerland [at World Cup 2010], but above all it is has brought many happy moments. We are a very united group and we are going to take this important game head on.”
