Reading chief expresses transfer regrets

Reading owner Anton Zingarevich has admitted that the club should have spent more money during Brian McDermott's reign.

• Keen: Adkins a sideways move

The Royals confirmed the appointment of Nigel Adkins - who was dismissed by Southampton in January - as their new manager on Tuesday, following the sacking of McDermott earlier this month.

Despite guiding the side to promotion as winners of the Championship last season, finishing one place above Southampton, McDermott was only able to spend just under £6 million on reinforcements in the summer. Adkins, meanwhile, spent over £30 million in that time, including the signing of Gaston Ramirez - believed to have cost the Saints up to £15 million.

"I just want to say that there was always a budget. That is the only comment that I want to make," Zingarevich said, when pressed on why McDermott was given such a small budget to work with.

"That was the decision that we all took in the summer. That is in the past and I don't really want to talk about it."

However, the Royals chief did concede that more money should have been spent by the club in January. The Berkshire side were believed to have been in for Tom Ince and Andrei Arshavin, yet failed on both occasions.

"I thought that we should have done more in January. Definitely. As you all know, we've tried to sign players but I think we should have been a little more active," he added

Zingarevich did hint, though, that Adkins would be set for a bigger budget this summer than his predecessor, although the club's Premier League survival is likely to have an effect on this thinking, claiming: "I'm backing Nigel, so we'll see what we need to do, we haven't discussed it yet. We'll wait until the end of the season and then see what needs to be done."
