Adkins handed Reading job

Reading have appointed Nigel Adkins as their new manager just two months after he was sacked by fellow Premier League strugglers Southampton.

• Keen: Adkins a sideways move
• Zingarevich expresses regrets

Adkins led Saints to back-to-back promotions as they returned to the top flight after a seven-year absence last May but he was axed in January, with Mauricio Pochettino taking his place in the St Mary's hotseat in a move that was widely condemned.

But the former Scunthorpe United boss is now set for a second crack at Premier League management after agreeing to join Reading, who parted company with Brian McDermott two weeks ago.

Owner Anton Zingarevich said: "I am delighted to bring Nigel to our club because he is perfect for us.

"He has great respect within the game, his CV speaks for itself and he has many attributes as a manager, he is progressive, he develops players, his teams play attacking, passing football but most of all he knows how to win games at all levels.

"This is an appointment we have made both with the short and long term in mind and Nigel can take our club forward. I know our supporters have been keen to hear news over the past two weeks and I am certain they will join me in saying it was worth the wait. I wish Nigel and Andy nothing but good luck and now we focus on eight hugely important games in the Premier League.

"Our supporters will also play a vital part in the finale to the season and I am certain Nigel will get an excellent reception from our fans at the Emirates on Saturday."

Adkins was equally thrilled by the appointment and is relishing the opportunity of keeping Reading in the Premier League.

"We've got to believe, we've got to do it. I've joined Reading Football Club, I want to be in the Premier League," Adkins said at his unveiling as the club's new manager on Tuesday morning.

"Can I just say, I've not made any comments since the dismissal at Southampton. I need to take this opportunity and thank all the people at Southampton - the staff, the players and the supporters as we were on a fantastic journey. I say thank you to them but we've all got to move on.

"I'm really proud and privileged to be the Reading manager now and yes we've got the belief and the desire to take one game at a time and make sure this football club remains in the Premier League. That is what I've got to do.

"It's a good football club first and foremost. I was impressed when I met the owner. It's a good football club. We've got to remain in the Premier League. We've got the ability here and I'm looking forward to it, I'm excited about the prospect of being here."

Adkins added: "Reading have got a good squad and they're in there fighting. They've got a good spirit, which they always have done, and I'm looking forward to getting amongst the players and I'm looking forward to the next game which is Arsenal on Saturday."
