Lucescu signs new Shakhtar deal

Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu has signed a new two-year contract extension with the Ukrainian champions until 2015.

Lucescu, who joined the club in 2004, has had a hugely successful reign up to now, winning six league titles, four Ukrainian Cups, four Ukrainian Super Cups and a UEFA Cup.

The Romanian has been rewarded by Shakhtar for his team's fine performance this term, with the side currently 15 points clear in the league, while Lucescu also guided them to the Champions League last 16, defeating Chelsea along the way.

The club confirmed the news on their website on Monday via an official statement.

The statement read: "Today, at the Donbass Arena, there was a working meeting between the president of FC Shakhtar, Rinat Akhmetov, and the head coach, Mircea Lucescu, which resulted in the signing of a new contract with the team coach."

Akhmetov said he was delighted to have managed to tie down Lucescu, whose contract was set to expire in the summer and who had reportedly attracted interest from Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Anzhi Makhachkala earlier this season.

"When we talked about a contract, the issue of money was not an issue because it's not important for me nor for Mr Lucescu,'' he said. "I was interested in only one major thing: whether this team has reached the maximum, or it can take a step forward? [Lucescu] told me simply: 'I love our fans. I love our players. I believe in my assistants. I am confident that together with the club, joining efforts, we are able to conquer new heights'."
