FutMex chief denies obscene gesture

FutMex Federation president Justino Compean denied Friday that he made an obscene gesture to fans upon his arrival in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Thursday ahead of Mexico's 2014 CONCACAF World Cup qualifier vs. Honduras on Friday.

"I have an injured finger. It (the gesture) was misinterpreted," Compean said.

Mexico national team coach Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre said he was not interested in discussing whether or not Compean gave the middle finger to Honduras fans or not.

"I have not seen the image and I am not interested in seeing it," he said. "You are talking about things that have nothing to do with football. Ask Justino. I have come here to talk about a match on Friday."

Mexico faces its first must-win match of the year when the team takes on Honduras Friday in the CONCACAF Hexagonal qualifier. On March 26 Mexico hosts the United States at Estadio Azteca. Panama will play Honduras also on March 26.

Honduras beat the U.S. at home 2-1 in the last set of CONCACAF matches, while Mexico hosted Jamaica and played to a 0-0 draw.

Three World Cup spots are at stake in the six-team, 10-match Hexagonal tournament, and a fourth 2014 berth will go to the winner of a two-game playoff between the fourth-place Hexagonal finisher and New Zealand (Oceania).

De la Torre, who refused to name his starters for the media, said he anticipates an aggressive Honduras.

"On their home turf, they have to be an aggressive team, although not violent," he said. "That's what I expect to see, but we will be the same way. We will take advantage of where they are deficient. This will be a match disputed in the midfield and circumstances will dictate the changes we make on the field."

Honduras coach Luis Fernando Suarez said he isn't buying into the argument that El Tri is debilitated following its 0-0 draw vs. Jamaica.

"I have never seen the giant (Mexico) fall," Suarez said. "The result at Azteca can't be taken in reference to anything. I can't picture Mexico playing like that (debilitated). They have a style to move forward, to go ahead and seek the victory."
