Ono extends A-League stay

Japanese midfielder Shinji Ono has re-signed with the Western Sydney Wanderers, agreeing to a deal that will see him remain with the A-League leaders until the end of next season.

Shinji Ono is determined to prove last season's exploits were no fluke.
Ono has become a fan favourite at Western Sydney

Ono, 32, joined the league's newcomers as a marquee player on a one-year deal and has helped the Wanderers climb to the top of the table with two matches remaining this season.

The former Japan international's renewal has given his side a boost ahead of Saturday's derby with Sydney FC as Western Sydney look to secure the Premier's Plate and he admits committing his future to the club was an easy decision.

"I love this club and I want to play more football with them so we can achieve more beyond this season," Ono said. "I have told anybody who asks me about the club that it is like a big family.

"Of course I mean the players and the coaching staff but I also mean everyone who works in the club - they are like family to me.

"We have had a great season and there is much more to do and I want to be part of it. We are all looking very forward to our clash with Sydney FC and any other challenges that come along this season. Once this season is over I will then look to next season and prepare with my club the best i can."

Western Sydney coach Tony Popovic was largely responsible for recruiting Ono and he admits the midfielder has become an important figure in the Wanderers' rise to the top.

"We see his talent every week with his creativity and his skills," Popovic said. "Shinji is an integral part of our team building next year and we are very happy that he has re-signed with us."
