Clarke feels for Rosenberg

Markus Rosenberg has been told not to give up on the dream of making it at West Bromwich Albion after failing to make an impression in his first season in English football.

Rosenberg, 30, has failed to score for West Brom since his summer move from Werder Bremen and has lost his place in the Sweden national team since representing them at last summer's European Championships.

It is a marked fall from grace that has left him dispirited but Hawthorns head coach Steve Clarke insists he must continue to be ready in case his opportunity comes in the final weeks of the campaign.

"It has been a disappointing season for him but there are still eight games to go and there is still hope that in those eight games he will get a chance to play and show what he can do," Clarke said. "He trains every day - he's a consummate professional and that kind of player is important.

"Not everyone can be a regular and the make-up and dynamic of the squad can be determined by those who don't play. I've been lucky this season that the players who haven't been selected have always trained well.

"They've pushed the other players to play to their maximum and it's a key part of why we've had such a good season."

Rosenberg, who is on a three-year contract, is back after a few days' break training with the rest of the club's non-internationals.

The former Malmo and Ajax man has suffered from the outstanding form of Shane Long and Romelu Lukaku and been restricted to only five Baggies starts - three of them in the cups - and 14 appearances as a substitute.

"Markus is very disappointed things haven't worked out for him," the coach added. "He hasn't had enough minutes on the pitch. Some of that is my fault and he can be unhappy with me. He shouldn't be unhappy with himself.

"We've had a few chats and he's frustrated with the situation. But he understands that if people have had a chance before him and done well, then that's part of football.

"His lack of involvement is mainly down to others. Shane and Rom have had really good seasons. We've seen how the team developed early on when we played with one striker.

"Shane and Romelu were in front of him for that spot and he also missed the bulk of the pre-season with us, so he's been playing catch-up. Unfortunately, he has not been able to get the minutes on the pitch."
