Diego denies Atletico talk

Wolfsburg midfielder Diego has rubbished rumours that he is set for a return to Atletico Madrid next season, insisting he is committed to the Bundesliga club.

Diego's future remains uncertain

Diego, 28, spent the 2011-2012 campaign at Atletico - helping the side to the Europa League - and Spanish media believe the Brazil international could be on his way back to Madrid in the summer.

However, the former Juventus player, who is tied down at Wolfsburg until 2014, says his only concern at the moment is doing well in Germany.

He told Wolfsburger Allgemeine: “I have heard about those rumours, but I have not been in contact with the club. Right now I am 100% focused on Wolfsburg and want to end the season on a high.”

Diego also told kicker: “We need to discuss my future and the options for it after this season.”

However, before talking to Wolfsburg about a new contract, Diego, who is believed to be on €8.2 million a year, wants to hear about the club’s ambitions for going forward.

“What suits the club, what suits me? We have to talk about that,” he said. “Those responsible will know which players are important for us.”

Wolfsburg general manager Klaus Allofs says the club have no plans to sell the playmaker.

“We could go into talks with Diego at a very late point,” Allofs said, knowing that it will be hard for any club to match the player’s current salary.

“I want him to stay,” Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking added.
