Ameobi agrees with procedure change

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi believes the Football Association (FA) needs to changes its stance on retrospective action in the wake of Callum McManaman's dangerous challenge on United's Massadio Haidara.

• Blog: "He's not that kind of lad"

McManaman drew the ire of Newcastle players, staff and fans when he escaped without a caution after catching Haidara with an ugly knee-high, two-footed challenge in Wigan's 2-1 victory.

And the 21-year-old luck's with official continued after the match with the FA powerless to take further action as the incident was witnessed by the match referees.

The FA's stance has angered the Magpies with the club's managing director Derek Llambias announcing the procedures were "not fit for purpose".

And Ameobi agreed with Llambias, believing a change to the system could only improve the game for all involved.

"Whatever helps the game, you have pros and cons to every argument, but I have always had an open view," Ameobi told Sky Sports.

"Whatever can make the game better for all parties, for players and for the fans, I think it is only right that we address those issues."

However, the 31-year-old admitted it would take more than a change of procedures to eliminate rash challenges from the game.

"I wouldn't say you expect them (bad challenges), but you understand that is what happens in football at times," he said.

"Things happen, people have a rush of blood to the head. No doubt I have done it over the years once or twice.

"We accept that is part of the game and we have to try and keep it out of the game. I think the lad knows it is a bad tackle so we just get on with it and move on."

Haidara was rushed back to Newcastle immediately after the game to discover the full extent of his injuries, but fortunately for the Frenchman, ESPN has discovered results have shown he escaped serious injury.

Ameobi said he had spoken to Haidara and confirmed the defender was in a positive mood following the incident.

"It was a shock what happened. He is a young lad, who has just come over. He is in good spirits, I saw him today and hopefully he won't be out for too long," Ameobi added.
