Chiellini sidelined by ankle injury

Giorgio Chiellini has been ruled out of Italy's friendly against Brazil and looks set to miss their World Cup qualifier against Malta due to an ankle problem.

Chiellini, 28, was named in the Azzurri squad despite picking up an injury at the weekend during Juventus' 2-0 win at Bologna.

However, national team doctor Enrico Castellacci has confirmed that the Juve defender has failed to recover in time for the Brazil clash and will return to Turin for further treatment.

"We conducted new tests on Chiellini's condition this morning and, although recent therapy has improved his condition, I can say with certainty he will not be available for the Brazil game," Castellacci told FIGC.it. "The player is also borderline for the Malta game.''

Italy face Brazil in Geneva on Thursday in preparation for the Group B fixture against bottom-side Malta in Valletta on Tuesday.
