Elber: Bayern don't need Lewandowski

Former Bayern Munich and Brazil striker Giovanni Elber believes his former club should not bother making a summer move for Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski.

Robert Lewandowski celebrates putting Borussia Dortmund 3-1 up against Freiburg
Robert Lewandowski currently tops the Bundesliga scoring charts with 19 goals this season

Elber enjoyed a distinguished Bundesliga career with Stuttgart, Bayern and Borussia Monchengladbach, with his 133 goals in 260 league games making him German football’s most prolific foreign import until Claudio Pizarro usurped him in 2010.

In recent years, Poland forward Lewandowski hasalso  been among the division’s most freescoring foreigners and the impressive form of the man who currently leads the Bundesliga scoring charts has seen Bayern heavily linked with an end-of-season swoop for him.

However, Elber feels that the Bavarians’ striking options are strong enough already, with the 40-year-old telling Munich’s Abendzeitung: “I would continue to back [Mario] Mandzukic and [Mario] Gomez.  But sometimes the football business is fast: Who is good today, might be deemed not useful the day after tomorrow and has to go.”

Gomez netted his 134th league goal in Bayern’s 2-1 win at Leverkusen last weekend to take him one strike clear of Elber, who said of him: “Goals tell their own story. It might be difficult to compare us since I was a different kind of player - drifting to the wings a lot and setting up quite a few goals. I was not only a target man. Mario is the opposite: He is a classic centre forward.”

Elber, who won four Bundesliga titles and the Champions League during his six years at Bayern, expects Gomez to fight hard for his place after a pre-season ankle injury kept him out for much of the campaign.

“I believe Gomez will win back his place in the team,” he said. “He has been in Bundesliga for a long time and knows how the wind blows. If he continues to score and keeps on pushing he will be back in the starting line-up soon.”
