Trapp dour after bizarre injury

Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp broke his hand while shooting an advert while with the Germany Under-21 team.

Trapp, 22, is expected to miss the remainder of the season with the injury, which occurred during a publicity shoot on Monday.

"The players were supposed to walk towards the camera," Trapp's agent, Dirk Hebel, explained in Bild. "Somebody caught Kevin's heels and he slipped."

Trapp added: "I don't know what happened. I started walking and all of a sudden I was down on the ground."

Germany midfielder Mario Gotze said that he had also had "several publicity shoots but they never were dangerous".

The goalkeeper sustained a metacarpal fracture and will have to undergo surgery that is likely to rule him out of the club's final eight games of the season. Oka Nikolov, 38, is set to take his place.

"We are shocked," Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff said. "This is a major loss for Frankfurt."

Germany assistant coach Hansi Flick added: "We feel very sorry for Kevin."

The newly promoted team are currently fourth in the Bundesliga and in contention for Champions League qualification, but a dismal run of form that has seen them claim just three points from their last six games has allowed the chasing pack to close in.

Five teams are now within three points of Frankfurt, and the loss of Trapp, who is currently kicker's top-ranked goalkeeper, is a significant blow to their chances.

"Kevin Trapp's injury is woeful for Eintracht Frankfurt and certainly a major setback," the club's CEO, Heribert Bruchhagen, said. "It is highly unlikely that Trapp will return before the end of the season."
