Gutierrez happy to help out at full-back

Jonas Gutierrez says he is ready to fill in at full-back if needed, following a spate of defensive injuries at Newcastle United.

• Blog: "Not that kind of lad"

The Magpies lost both Mathieu Debuchy and Massadio Haidara to injury during Sunday's controversial 2-1 defeat at Wigan Athletic.

While Debuchy will likely miss a month, the prognosis on Haidara still remains unclear with the 20-year-old set for more scans later this week.

With Newcastle now somewhat depleted at full-back, Gutierrez has offered himself up for the role having filled in at left-back on Sunday.

"I don't have any problem at all playing left-back in the future," he told the Evening Chronicle. "It is not the position I normally play in but with injuries it might be somewhere that I have to play. I did my best for the team and will try and improve my performances if I get another chance there. Everyone has to be ready to play anywhere this year. It is a crazy season for injuries.

"We have lost Hatem [Ben Arfa] and Colo [Fabricio Coloccini] already and now we have two more. It is ridiculous that we have had so many problems. This year we have had too many injuries but we have to stay together because we have a lot of big games to play both in the league and also in the Europa League. We are ready to do our very best now."

Although Newcastle sit 13th in the Premier League table and are six points clear of the relegation zone, Gutierrez feels his side still have plenty of work to do to make sure they are safe come the end of the season.

"We did our best at Wigan to maintain the gap to the relegation zone but lost in the last minute," Gutierrez said. "I would like to say we have done our job, but we didn't because we lost on Sunday and that means we must still think about it [relegation]. There's a lot of teams there who are in the same position as us and the next game [away to Manchester City] is a very difficult one.

"We cannot say we've done our job and we are safe yet. We have to win a few more games to say: 'finally we have done the job'. Our confidence is still the same, we still believe we can do it but we lost a game in the last minute. We have to accept this, make the most of the two weeks and get on with it."
