Ikeme injured after punching wall

Carl Ikeme may miss a large part of Wolves' battle to avoid a second successive relegation after damaging his hand in a dressing-room argument with manager Dean Saunders, according to reports.

The Championship club fear Ikeme broke a bone in his hand as a result of reportedly punching the wall after a heated exchange with Saunders, during half-time in Saturday's 2-1 win over Bristol City.

The goalkeeper could be sidelined until the middle of April and Saunders has been forced to recall Ireland Under-21 international Aaron McCarey from his loan spell at Walsall to cover for Ikeme.

The incident is the latest embarrassment of a difficult campaign at Molineux and was sparked by the calamitous own goal conceded by Wolves' No. 1 on Saturday.

David Davis' back pass squirmed through Ikeme's legs and the goalkeeper is believed to have taken exception to criticism from Saunders during the interval.

Ikeme was so angry at being singled out he is thought to have slammed his fist into the dressing-room wall, injuring himself and forcing Wolves into a substitution, with Dorus de Vries appearing for the second half.

Saunders claimed after the win that Ikeme had injured his hand during the game in the first half but the damage was self-inflicted at the interval.

The former Doncaster man had an x-ray at the weekend and Wolves fear he has fractured a bone. He is expected to be sidelined for at least a month and may not play again this season.

"I had a go at all of them [at half-time]. But what goes on in the dressing room stays there - I don't tell people what I say to the players at half-time apart from saying I had a go at them. Carl hurt his hand on the pitch and that made my mind up," Saunders said after Saturday's game.

"It was forced on me because his hand wasn't perfect and he may need an x-ray. But it was a calamity goal to concede. The two of them should have done better."
