Valencia cites injuries for drop in form

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia has admitted he has been disappointed by his performances this season.

• Blog: Disjointed United grab win

The Ecuador international was voted the club's player of the year for the 2011-12 season but has lost his place in the current campaign.

The former Wigan player believes the foot and hip injuries have contributed to his struggle to recapture the form which saw United pay £16 million for him in 2009. "It's not been quite the season I would have hoped for on a personal front," he said.

"I think the injuries I've had have held me back a bit. I still get the odd twinge from the last injury I had to my leg and that has perhaps affected my progress slightly."

Only David Silva created more Premier League goals last season than Valencia, who had 13 assists, but he has provided just four this year, while failing to score himself. And Valencia has only started one game in the last month but hopes to play his part as United bid for a Double of the Premier League and the FA Cup.

"I hope to get the chance to be involved in as many games as possible," he said. "If I'm picked I'm determined to grab my opportunities and do my best for my team-mates, the manager and the fans."
