Postecoglou named All-Stars coach

Melbourne Victory's Ange Postecoglou has been chosen by A-League fans to coach of the A-League All-Stars squad set to face Manchester United at ANZ Stadium.

• Brooks: Socceroos' moment of truth

Postecoglou received 36.8% of votes in a fan poll of 15,000, just shading Western Sydney Wanderers coach Tony Popovic, who garnered 36.2% of votes.

The two-time premiership winning coach said he could not wait to pit minds against Red Devils mentor Sir Alex Ferguson.

"It's an honour to be voted in by the fans and a thrill to be the coach for the first All Stars game," Postecoglou said.

"It's a concept that is sure to grow legs and become a mainstay in our football calendar. I think there will be massive interest in this game.

"After a couple of months without Hyundai A-League football fans can start to get withdrawal symptoms, it's a great way to cut short the wait for football fans.

"After three seasons coaching in the Hyundai A-League I think people know the type of football I want to play and I'm looking forward to putting together a team with the fans that can do that."

On top of picking the coach, A-League fans will also have their say on who should be chosen for the All-Stars squad, with the public having 50% control of selecting Postecoglou's team.

An expert panel (20%), the Professional Footballers Australia Team of the Year (20%) and Postecoglou (10%) will decide the rest of the squad.

Postecoglou will also be able to choose an additional three players of his choosing to make up the 18-man squad.

However, the former Brisbane Roar coach could be without 15 A-League players with a mainly domestic based Socceroos squad set to compete in the East Asian Cup finals at the same time.
