Higuain: We'll push Barca until the end

Gonzalo Higuain insists Real Madrid will push league leaders Barcelona until the end of the La Liga season after scoring a brace in Saturday's 5-2 triumph over Mallorca.

• Rigg: Madrid Achilles heel exposed

Second-placed Madrid cut the gap to 10 points on Barca as they came from a goal down twice at the Bernabeu. Goals to Higuain, Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema secured the points for the home side, which the Argentina international believes will keep their title hopes alive.

"Our aim is to put pressure on Barcelona and not to let them relax for one second. There is still a long way to go. We're going to fight until the very end," Higuain said.

"I'm very happy. Mallorca are on a good run of form and took the lead twice, but we gritted our teeth and showed what type of football we can play."

Assistant coach Aitor Karanka was delighted by Higuain's goalscoring feats, but says the team must maintain their current form in order stay near the top of the table.

"Higuain put in a lot of effort against Celta [Vigo] but he couldn't find the back of the net. Today he scored, and that will give him confidence. That's good.

"The message that we give is the same as everyone, that we have to fight for second position, we can't come below second. The message is the same, that above second is complicated and below, we don't want to make things difficult for ourselves and we have to ensure second place.

"We made a lot of mistakes in the first-half, but corrected it at the break. If things don't go well like against Deportivo or today, what's important is that we can change the dynamic of each game."
