Gallas calls for racism crackdown

Andre Villas-Boas expects UEFA to take action against Inter Milan after their supporters appeared to racially abuse Tottenham players during their Europa League defeat in Milan.

Tottenham defender William Gallas has called on UEFA and FIFA to take a stronger stance on racism following allegations of crowd abuse during Spurs' Europa League defeat against Inter Milan on Thursday.

Inter fans were heard directing racist chants towards a number of Tottenham players - including Emmanuel Adebayor, Gallas and Mousa Dembele - during the Nerazzurri's 4-1 win.

Gallas believes AC Milan's decision to walk off the pitch after Kevin-Prince Boateng was the subject of racist chants during a friendly in January should be enough notice for football's governing bodies to enforce stricter punishments for those accused.

"Some players come out of the pitch to show they are disappointed," Gallas said. "I understand it and that shows we are not happy about this.

"Fifa and Uefa have to take their decision. I'm disappointed. I don't understand it, but sometimes the best thing is to punish the people who do this. It's not the first time we've had these incidents.

"It's been happening for a long time so the people have to react, Uefa and Fifa, because they have to understand what we can feel, when we are on the pitch. To hear that is not good."

Midfielder Dembele supported Gallas's assertion that current punishments are unsuccessful in eradicating racial abuse.

"It's very disappointing," Dembele said. "They [Uefa] have to do something so that it stops. They always put some sanctions, or whatever, but it never helps.

"They have to find other things that help because I think it's important. If they want to keep football very high then they need to take these kind of things out of football as well."3

Anti-discrimination body FARE confirmed on Friday that Inter will face no more than a fine for the incidents.
