Wenger calls for clampdown on racism

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes clubs who do not come down hard on supporters that are found guilty of racist chanting should be threatened with suspension from European competition.

• Wenger: Every game a cup final
• Blog: Arsenal now have blueprint

After Tottenham players were subjected to racist abuse in Thursday night's Europa League game against Inter Milan at the San Siro, the issue of racism has resurfaced in a season that has already seen several unsavoury incidents affecting English clubs.

Now Wenger has joined in the debate by suggesting that the problem needs to be addressed with firm action from the game's authorities, and has backed calls for punishments to include the threat of removal from the Champions League or Europa League.

"It looks to be a recurring problem in Italy when English teams play [in Italy] and it's not acceptable," Wenger said. "You have to isolate people who do that and punish them.

"I don't think that walking off the pitch is the right answer. If you walk off, you have no game anymore. When their team is losing, anybody could start racist chants and you basically get them to master the situation. To ban them from football or ban the clubs if you can prove they do not punish their racist fans, yes that is a better answer.

"Do we do enough? I don't know. I think it's got better. If I compare the time where I played and today, we have made big improvements but there's still some work to do and there's always the possibility of setbacks."
