Brazil remain at record FIFA ranking low

World Cup 2014 hosts Brazil remain in 18th place in the latest FIFA World Rankings, their worst ever position, as a lack of competitive matches continues to prevent the five-time world champions from climbing.

Such has been the Selecao's slide - due to the fact friendly matches are rewarded with less points than World Cup qualifiers - they are only the fifth-highest ranked South American side.

The big movers this month were Afghanistan, who climbed a remarkable 48 places up to a record high of 141st after victories over Laos and Sri Lanka, putting them narrowly ahead of regional rivals India, who also enjoyed an impressive ascension of 24 places to 143rd.

Ecuador moved up to 11th, while the top five remained the same with World Cup and European Championship holders Spain on top of the pile, followed by Germany, Argentina, England and Italy.

Sudan and Chad had the biggest cause for disappointment after dropping 23 and 22 places respectively.
