Southampton hit by FA charge

Southampton have been charged by the Football Association for failing to control their players following the awarding of a penalty to Norwich during a Premier League game on Saturday.

Referee Mark Clattenburg gave the Canaries a last-minute spot kick at Carrow Road after deciding that Luke Shaw had fouled Grant Holt in the penalty area.

A number of Saints players immediately surrounded Clattenburg after he made the call, to bemoan his decision. Artur Boruc went on to save Holt's penalty to earn the Saints a 0-0 draw.

The south-coast club have until 1600 GMT on Friday, March 15 to respond to the charge.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino appears to have escaped with also being charged by the FA after he stormed onto the pitch to confront Clattenburg regarding the penalty at the final whistle.

"I am sorry if I offended anybody," Pochettino said after the game.
