China set to offer Lippi role - reports

Provisional ban for FIFA executive

FIFA executive committee member Vernon Manilal Fernando has been provisionally suspended by world football's governing body while an investigation into corruption allegations is carried out.

A FIFA statement said the ban would prevent Fernando, a Sri Lankan, "from taking part in any kind of football-related activity at national and international level for a period of a maximum of 90 days" in order "to prevent interference with the establishment of the truth''.

The measure imposed on the 63-year-old is related to FIFA prosecutor Michael J Garcia's investigation into the alleged misuse of Asian Football Confederation accounts.

FIFA's statement, published on its website, did not give details of any specific allegations made against Fernando.

It said the provisional suspension had been imposed "at the request of Michael J. Garcia" by Hans-Joachim Eckert, the chairman of the adjudicatory chamber of FIFA's ethics committee.

"The proceedings relate to formal ethics charges brought in a final report filed by the chairman of the investigatory chamber with the chairman of the adjudicatory chamber," the statement said.

"The case is now with the jurisdiction of the adjudicatory chamber for any further procedural steps that chamber deems appropriate."
