Alves targets 'historic' Barca comeback

Dani Alves says the time has come for Barcelona to add a "historic comeback" to their achievements as they try to overturn a 2-0 first-leg Champions League deficit against AC Milan at the Camp Nou.

Alves echoed the thoughts of Xavi Hernandez when he told Barca TV on Sunday that Barca would not be afraid take risks in order to turn the tie around on Tuesday night.

"We have been a great team, but we have never completed a historic comeback," he said. "Perhaps the moment has come to do it. We will try to win, but if we do not take risks we will not win. We are not afraid."

Talk of putting things right after the first-leg loss in Italy and two subsequent demoralising defeats to domestic rivals Real Madrid has been prominent around the Camp Nou in recent days.

The Brazil international said Barca had a "mental problem" at the moment and needed to cut themselves off from any negativity.

"When you have negative things around you, it is necessary to close yourself off," he explained. "If you do not do that, it spreads. Hopefully we have learned our lesson and on Tuesday we will compete like we know how."

Alves suggested there had been too much talk about first team coach Tito Vilanova's absence and stand-in Jordi Roura's recent struggles.

"If you win everything it goes well and when you lose someone needs to be blamed," he said. "But we need to show that the team can play well when the leader is not around."

Saturday evening's 2-0 Primera Division home win over bottom side Deportivo La Coruna, in which Alves set up Barca's opener with a pinpoint cross that was headed home by Alexis Sanchez, had boosted spirits around the club, he said.

"The objective was to win and to reach Tuesday with a boost to confidence," he added. "We went out to enjoy ourselves. We did what we always do."
