Seedorf, Botafogo land Guanabara Cup

Clarence Seedorf helped inspire Botafogo to the Guanabara Cup after they defeated Vasco da Gama 1-0.

Seedorf, 36, who joined the Brazilian club from AC Milan last year, claimed his first title since moving to South America as Botafogo wrapped up the first stage of the Rio de Janeiro state championship.

The former Netherlands international started the move that led to Lucas' 80th-minute winner at the Engenhao Stadium with a back-flick to a team-mate who then crossed into the area for Lucas who fired a low shot through the Vasco defenders.

"It was one of the most important goals of my career,'' Lucas said.

The victory gives the club their seventh Guanabara Cup and ensures their qualification to the final of the Rio championship. Botafogo will automatically secure the state title if they can also win the Rio Cup, the competition's second stage.

Vasco, who have not won a Rio trophy since 2004, would have won the title with a draw as they had the best set of results coming into the final.

Elsewhere, Uruguay international Diego Forlan also claimed his first trophy since arriving in Brazil, helping Internacional see off Sao Luiz 5-0 to win the Piratini Cup, the first stage of the Rio Grande do Sul state championship. Forlan joined the club in July of last year.
